Coffey County

OK Kids Event

September 11–13, 2026

John Redmond Reservoir

 

OK Kids (Outdoor Kansas for Kids) is a statewide program sponsored by the Kansas Wildscape Foundation and supported by local and national partners. The program gives kids a fun, hands-on opportunity to experience and appreciate the outdoors. Coffey County is proud to host a weekend filled with outdoor activities, food,

and family fun.

All activities are free for participants.

Camping Details – Friday & Saturday at Riverside West Campgrounds

  • Vehicles must remain at campsites unless exiting the campground.

  • All pets must be leashed and kept at campsites only.

  • Bicycles are welcome but not permitted in Riverside West after dark.

  • Electric bikes and scooters are prohibited.

 

Complimentary shuttle service will run continuously between the parking area and activity locations throughout Riverside West.

 

Saturday, September 12

7:30 AM – OK Kids Fun Run – Start the day off with a run around New Strawn! Choose between a 1-mile or 5K route. Prizes for the top three finishers in each race. Registration: 7:15 AM at New Strawn Community Center. Sponsored by Burlington Recreation

7:45–9:15 AM – Pancake Breakfast – Enjoy a free breakfast after the Fun Run and before the fishing tournament. Location: New Strawn Community Center.

9:00–11:00 AM – Fishing Tournament at New Strawn Lake – Catch-and-release event. Children under age 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Bring your own fishing pole. Registration: 8:15 AM. Worms will be provided (no outside bait or artificial lures). Sponsored by Coffey County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Wildlife & Parks, and Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge.

10:30–4:30 PM – Yard Games – Friendly competition for the whole family.

11:00–4:30 PM – Bubbles, Sidewalk Chalk and Baby Care Station – Sensory fun for little ones, sponsored by Coffey County Mothers of Preschoolers.

11:30–12:30 PM – Free Lunch – Hot dogs and chips courtesy of Coffey Health System. Location: Shelter House #6.

1:00–4:30 PM – Riverside West Activities

  • Canoeing – Supervised by Coffey County Water Rescue (life jackets are provided)

  • Putt Putt and Library Fun – Crafts, outdoor play, and games from all six Coffey County Library branches

  • Pellet Shoot – Test your aim!

  • U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Outreach Trailer

  • Face Painting – Courtesy of Burlington High School art students.

  • Tie-Dye T-Shirts – Make your own OK Kids shirt

  • Dunk Tank – Aim, throw, splash!

  • Pedal Cars – Race your friends

  • Obstacle Course – Join the Kansas Army National Guard as they put you through the paces on their challenging obstacle course.

  • Archery – Beginner-friendly target shooting

  • Paintball Shoot – Equipment provided by Coffey County Sheriff’s Office

  • Inflatables – including All-Star Dunk Contest and Soccer Darts for older participants

  • Slingshot Target Shooting – Hosted by Burlington Police & Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge

  • Firefighter Obstacle and Agility Course – Test your skills with the Coffey County Fire Department

  • Rock Wall and Military Obstacle Course – Provided by the Kansas Army National Guard

 

2:00–3:00 PM – Snow Cones – Cool off with the Burlington High School Cheerleaders. Shelter House #6.

4:45–5:30 PM – Science Heroes: “Adventure of the Missing Color” – Join Science Heroes on a fun-filled adventure where science comes to life through exciting experiments and interactive demonstrations.

5:30–7:00 PM – Free BBQ Supper – Provided by the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office. Shelter House #6.

7:00 PM – 9/11 Memorial – Join our local first responders for a brief ceremony honoring the victims of September 11 and recognizing the courage and sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call 25 years ago.

 

Prize Drawing – Numerous prizes will be available with four lucky participants, ages 15 and younger, being awarded a Lifetime Kansas Hunting or Fishing License. Participants must be present to win.

 

Approximately 8:00 PM – 25th Anniversary Fireworks Show – Join us in the OK Kids parking area as we celebrate the 25th Annual OK Kids event with a spectacular fireworks display. Fireworks will be launched from the top of the dam road.

 

Sunday, September 13

7:00–9:30 AM – Free Breakfast – All campers and participants are invited to enjoy breakfast, sponsored by Coffey County Fire District #1. Location: Shelter House #6.
