Free Meals

Lunch, BBQ supper and dessert on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday are all part of the OK Kids Coffey County event. So whether you just drove out for the day or are camping the whole weekend, get in line and enjoy!

Prize drawings for kids in attendance at the supper follows the BBQ supper Saturday evening. Be sure to stay for dessert!



Shuttle Service  

Shuttle runs all day Saturday from day parking area to on-site activity stations and to Trap Shooting activity (off site). Accessibility needs will be handled upon request, please contact an event staff member.




Outdoor Kansas for Kids Coffey County activities are adult supervised, designed to introduce or test skill, and all activities stress safety first.

Activities are stationed throughout the Riverside West campgrounds, at the New Strawn City Lake, and Trapshoot area (TBA). "Ongoing" activities run from 1:30 to 4:00 pm Saturday. "Scheduled" activities have specific times on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

SPECIAL NOTES

Catch & Release Fishing Tourney is held at the City of New Strawn city lake (not at the Riverside West campground area). Transportation is not provided for the fishing derby. Free registration begins at 8:15 aml derby starts at 9:00 am. Bring own pole; worms provided.

Trap Shoot activity is held at the John Redmond Shooting Range.  Shuttle service will run every 30 minutes from Shelter #6. Participants do not need a hunter’s safety card; do not bring personal firearms, all supplies provided.

Archery

Ongoing: Saturday, 1:00-4:00 pm
Ages: Small children to adult
Description: T.H.E. (Target Hunting Education) Archery Club (Topeka, KS) is hosting the archery shoot again this year. This was one of the most popular events last year.

Instruction and supervision provided for all age groups to learn or test skill and marksmanship.

T.H.E. Archery Club provides this type of activity for schools as well and we look forward to having them at our 2010 Outdoor Kansas for Kids Coffey County event.

Boat Rides


Scheduled: Saturday, 4:15-5:50 pm
Ages: Small children require supervising adult.
Description:

Catch a ride on the old Neosho River Channel. Board at the boat ramp next to the main gate entrance.

Life jackets provided.

To ensure the safety of OK Kids CC participants, the boat rides will not start until all canoes are off the channel.

Breakfast


Scheduled: Sunday, 8:00-9:30 am

Description:

Just what you need to get your day started: Pancakes hot off the griddle, syrup, sausage patties, biscuits and sausage gravy, orange juice and milk.

Canoeing


Ongoing: Saturday, 1:00-4:00 pm
Ages: Children younger than 9 years old require supervising adult
Description:

Coffey County Water Rescue hosts this event that includes group canoeing in the old Neosho River channel. Cruise the channel, enjoy the wildlife and birds, and test your stamina paddling the boats!

Canoes and life jackets provided. Children under 9 years of age are required to have a responsible, supervising adult in attendance.

Dessert Cook-off


Scheduled: Saturday, 5:30-7:00 pm
Description:

Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops are invited to compete in this annual competition. Show off your cooking skills to compete for the Traveling Dutch Oven Trophy!

This competition proves to be a challenge for all competitor teams and a delicious treat for Outdoor Kansas for Kids Coffey County event go-ers! After the competition, all prepared desserts will be served with the dinner Saturday evening to which you are also invited. Judging will be based on taste, appearance, and doneness.

Competing Teams 

  • Receive $25 toward the cost of supplies.
  • Need to prepare three (3) desserts of your choosing to be cooked that day.
  • Submit one (1) of three (3) desserts for a blind judging.

Winning Team

  • An item or items for their troop (previous year winners received a new Dutch oven).
  • The "Dutch Oven Traveling Trophy" with the winning troop's name and year of competition.
  • Bragging rights for one year!

NOTE: The trophy must be returned for the following year's competition.

Plan on competing in this unique event and bring your best outdoor dessert recipe because in 2010, you'll have to beat the current champions: Girl Scout Troop and their chocolate cake-pudding-cherry creation!

Firefighter Competition


Scheduled: Saturday, 1:30-2:30 pm
Ages: 3-5 person teams (children and adults welcome)
Description:

This is not what you think it might be...the firefighters aren't competing--you are! This friendly and wet competition pits two teams against each other in a battle of accuracy with water against time.

The object of this contest is to be the first team to move the barrel hanging high above with a spray of water from your fire hose in competition against an opposing team AND you must accomplish this before the fire horn sounds.

So strap on some goggles, bring some dry clothes, get ready, get set, and spray! Goggles provided.

Fishing Tourney (Catch & Release)


Scheduled: Saturday, 8:15-9:00 am REGISTRATION
Saturday, 9:00-10:30 am Tourney
Ages: Children younger than 10 years old are required to have a supervising adult.
Description:

Start off the weekend with a fun and challenging activity! Catch and Release Fishing Derby at New Strawn City Lake.

A short fishing clinic is held prior to the start of the fishing derby. Registration is required and begins at 8:15 am.

Age Groups: 3 and younger, 4-5 years old, 6-7 years old, 8-10 years old, 11-12 years old, and 13 years and older.

Trophies awarded if 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each age group.

Kids under 9 years of age are required to have a responsible adult in attendance.

Please bring your own fishing pole and tackle. Worms provided by Coffey County Sheriff's Office.

Transportation is not provided for this event.

Hayrack Rides


Scheduled: Saturday, 7:00-9:00 pm
Ages: All ages
Description:

Take a ride through the campgrounds on the evening hayrack ride. Better check the calendar to see if the moon will be full and high in the sky for your night time ride. Sometimes the lights go out for an added thrill.

Your safety is important to us. Please ride responsibly. There is no standing or jumping off/on the wagon while it is in motion. Bicycles are not allowed to follow closely behind the wagon during hay rack rides (or shuttle rides).

Special Notes: Kids must have an intact wristband to ride the shuttle and/or hayrack ride without a supervising adult.

Bicycle riders are not allowed to follow closely behind the wagon during hayrack rides or shuttle rides.

For your safety and the safety of other event go-ers, NO bicycles are permitted on the roads after dark.

Horse Rides

Description:

Saddle up for this activity.

Horse rides, led by handlers Bill & Kara Reynolds, give kids an opportunity to see what it's like to ride a horse.

Location of horse rides is planned to be at the east end of the campgrounds (near the canoe area) but may be moved.  Check signs (or activity map) at campgrounds day of event.

Jet Ski Simulator

Magic by Pete

Description:

Just when you think you have it figured out, you will be baffled then amazed. Prepare to be entertained!

Pete Walterscheid considers himself a serious student of slight-of-hand and frequently performs without the use of gimmicks or fake apparatus. He has had years of performing for private parties, banquets, and corporate events; as well as a restaurant magician performing weekly for over two years locally in southeast Kansas.

Pete's material is "clean" as well as humorous. His comedy magic is unique and provides top-notch entertainment for all ages.

Milk Crate Climb

Description:

Test your skill and balance as you see how high you can go in this activity.

Build your own milk crate mountain, stacking cartons as you climb. Don't worry! The safety harness will keep you from tumbling down your mountain.

Star Video has made this activity a great tradition at Outdoor Kansas for Kids Coffey County.

Paintball Trail Shoot

Take your best shot at 3-D targets as you move through this course in the wooded area of Riverside West campgrounds.

Rope Bridge

Description:

Imagine a mountain gorge, deep and wide, and you must get across to safety...and the only thing between you and the other side is a bridge made of rope. Watch your step!

Test your balance and coordination as you navigate across the rope bridge.

Smokey Bear

Description:

"Smokey Bear" is one of the best known bears of the great outdoors and he will be making a special guest appearance at this event. So watch for "Smokey" as he comes out of the forest and moves about the campgrounds meeting and greeting OK Kids participants.

Stop and say "Hi!" or get your picture taken with a real camping celebrity and remember...only YOU can prevent forest fires!

Supper

Description:

Enjoy a BBQ supper, a little entertainment, and some cool prizes for kids in attendance. Hang around for some delicious desserts cooked up by the Scout Troop competitors.

Prize drawings following the supper. Dessert from the Dessert Cook-off competition are served after supper, also.

Trap Shoot

Description:

Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks officers and Ducks Unlimited host and supervise this event that focuses on safety and skill.

Hunter safety card NOT required. All supplies provided, including hearing protection.

Do not bring personal firearms for this event.


This event will be held at the John Redmond Trap Shooting area.  Shuttle will run every 30 minutes from Shelter #6 starting at 12:45 pm.
